Thoughts on Being on My Own Again

Honestly, I am lonely here on my own. That is pretty silly considering that I have my front door open and my neighbors and their dogs are constantly sticking their heads in to say hello. We're all moving in at the same time since this apartment is newly renovated. I suppose it is just being alone that is hard - not being partnered. They all have partners and dogs. I have me.

Unpacking all my stuff from storage I have had to sort through everything to find the essence of Amy. There are so many great pieces of art - many of which were created by artists for me. It makes me feel loved and lonely at the same time. I suppose this is just the opening line in another chapter of my life.

Today I facilitated a full day retreat for one of my clients and the Music Director made a poignant statement about stories. Every story needs to have an ending that you're driving towards and drama, especially disaster, sells well. She was speaking about documentary film - challenge and overcoming it to reach your goal. Here I am facing my challenge. All kinds of old, layered feelings coming out.

Don't Panic

That's my learning from this LA weekend. I totally pushed myself way beyond stretch goals into panic and despite the extremes I was able to concur all.

Vising Holly, my roommate from Sophomore year of Ithaca College was the first hurdle. We hadn't seen each other in 20 years. The funny thing is that we both still look 19 and even a bit alike with our long blond hair.

The next challenge was camping out as we prepared for our early morning ascent of Mount Baldy. I do not enjoy camping: tents, dirt, bugs, cold, no bathrooms, no light, and weird sounds, I have turned into an urban girl. But the camping also worked out.

Then the greatest challenge, climbing, for it was not hiking but actual steep climbing, Mount Baldy. Holly taught us a fantastic way to stay energized. She calls it the rest step and what you do is every five steps you rest for a moment with all your weight on your back foot. As the killer climb pushed us to our limits the five steps became my mantra. Holly kept insisting I rest but I was in a groove. Plus, if I stopped I worried I would never start again.

The climb down pushed me to my limits. The terrain is all tiny marble rocks on totally steep paths exposed to the elements. The trail was called The Devil's backbone. We climbed along the narrowest ridges with just this crazy marble surface and sometimes trees and bolders to anchor our steps. The views were both amazing and terrifying. One wrong move and you were taking the fast route down.

The final challenge was the chairlift that brought us down the final 4,000 ft. I shared a chair with Holly's friend Nancy who is my hiking hero. she proved she could climb the mountain and her strength inspired me not to be scared on the chair.

I'll post photos when I get to a computer. We're driving back to Holly and Dylan's place for showers, drinks, hot-tubbing and kabbabs...and giving my blisters some TLC.

Hiking for Social Justice

On a recent climb of Mt. Kilimajaro in Tanzania, my roommate from college, Holly Murdoch O'Brien, witnessed the horrible working conditions of the people who support treks on the mountain. Many of the porters did not have warm clothing, rain gear, or boots, but the filmmakers were really stunned when they discovered many of their porters had been sleeping without sleeping bags in temperatures below freezing.

To bring attention to the porters Holly is creating a feature documentary film "Cloudwalkers of Kilimanjaro" through the eyes of the local Tanzanian people who make their living by working on the mountain.

Nearly 20 years after graduating from Ithaca College Holly and I are reconnected, finding a shared concern for promoting social change in developing countries.

HOW YOU CAN HELP...
By supporting my hike, you can take part in the solution.

To raise funds for the film Holly and I are hiking Mount Baldy located outside of Los Angeles, California on October 25, 2008. Our goal is to raise $15,000 so that Holly and her film crew can return to Mt. Kilimanjaro in January to begin researching and scouting in preparation for the film shoot.

My personal goal is to raise $1,000 and every donation helps. Please consider making a fully tax-deductible contribution which can be easily done online www.firstgiving.com/amykweskin.

You are also invited to participate in the hike. Just ask me for details.

Thank you for considering this request.
