Reaching Another Goal

Amazing, when you imagine your goals, they actually can come true. As my friend Leah says, you may think that something just happens but it is actually been in development for years. She's correct, I've been working up to all these goals - it just feels like they are happening unexpectedly. Kind of like those "overnight successes" you read about in the fields of acting and music - but then you learn they were on the small stage circuit for decades.

Well, my achievements aren't quite that large but I will be teaching a course at California State University East Bay - Hayward in their new Arts Administration Certificate program. Check it out!

Here's the seminar I will be teaching: Leadership in the Arts-The Arts Sector at California State University East Bay - Hayward. The course begins February 22 and registration closes on February 19. This is a very affordable option for career transitioners, emerging leaders and mid-career managers to work towards a certificate in Arts Administration.

Course Description: An overview of the arts industry and its creative, curatorial and commercial sectors including artists and performers, professional artisans, craftspersons, technicians, managers, audience, entrepreneurs, critics, the general culture & society, law & politics, economics & finance, science, technology, and the environment. The basic principles, concepts, processes and practices relating to organizations in the arts industry dynamic including planning, non profit and commercial organizational structures, leadership, fundraising, artistic programming, arts education, advocacy and marketing, will be discussed. Students will know how to: Identify and research specific discipline related issues. Differentiate between not for profit and for profit entities and projects. Access arts industry networks in the public and private sectors.

Indecision and Chronic Illness

Last night I had the opportunity to hangout with Liz, Nicole's friend who is a chiropractor. Last time we were together was in London when Liz was visiting from Barcelona and Nicole from San Francisco. Both Liz and I are now back in San Francisco and as with out first meeting this one was just as profound.



Liz is beyond a free spirit. I would call her a free radical. When we met in London she was bouncing off the walls, literally. But then she sat down next to me, put her hand on my back and I felt this unexpected surge of warmth. sometimes when all around me is chaos I imagine that warmth and instantly relax.



Chatting with Liz she bestowed another gem. "Chronic illness comes from indecision, causing endless suffering, but it can be reversed." This reminds me of what I am learning through Buddhist meditation. Trying to hold on to something or even pushing it away results in suffering.



I am working on letting go of the painful past which I keep revisiting over and over to figure out the clues that will help me understand what went wrong. I am doing the same with a few current situations as well. This causes me headaches and stomachaches. Is this really how I want to live my life, noodling over what I wish was or wasn't?



My goal is to be more decisive and to be present with the intention of living healthily in mind, body and soul.

Closed out Career Goals Blog

I woke up in the middle of the night last night and had a realization - the Career Goals blog was too much for me to keep up. I wasn't passionate about it as I am about this blog. Did I ever reference the content? No. It had so few hits that I realized it was just more jibber jabber to keep me busy. So, I just deleted it. Gosh, it went away in less than a second. That was a bit scary.

Streamlining my web presence

I've taken a big step and have streamlined my web presence. Up until about 30 minutes ago I had five blogs (although I was only writing on two of them) and three websites (only using two). Yes, I was hogging the Internet.

Unfortunately www.regenxers.com didn't make the cut. It is a concept but doesn't need a website...yet.

Setting the Scene

A reflection on the leadership think tank...

Title: 10 Animated People

Players: 10 arst and culture management professionals from around the country (one from London). Some are consultants, a couple are administrators and several run management service programs. This is a mix of emerging, midcareer and seasoned professionals.

Audience: 7 staff members and 3 graduate school students called summer scholars. These are just observers who took a pledge to not speak during the 12 hours of conversation.

Location: Meeting room in a Washington DC corporate office. Six tables are formed into a square with giant board room chairs around them.

Props: Flip charts, colored markers and bottles of water.

Objective: To determine what it means to be a leaders in arts and culture management.

Rules: Play nice, listen, be non-judgemental, follow the facilitator.

Curtain opens to reveal eighteen people sitting around a table, each in a different posture, some having side conversations and two women standing near flip charts attempting to guide the conversation.

Leaving for Las Vegas

Tomorrow I depart for Las Vegas to attend the Americans for the Arts convention. For the start of the trip my mom is joining me to do a Thelma and Louise holiday, without the plunging ending. However, we are happy to pick up Brad Pitt if he needs a ride.
