This week I developed laryngitis, which has forced me to whisper. Who knew that whispering could be an enticing way to communicate? As I have been going about my days, people have had to lean in close to hear what I have to say - and really listen. I see that they are more focused on my face and my words.
In the retail environment the cashiers have given me extra attention, lots of smiles and even shared stories with me. One woman told me that when she gets laryngitis she tells her friends that it was caused by a late night Ninja attack.
Unfortunately, the whispering is not by choice and I hope that my voice returns in time for class tomorrow. Then again, maybe this will be an opportunity for my students to listen closely.
